Tensions around the world have intensified over recent months following the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Now Beijing has branded American leaders “maniacs” and condemned their harsh stance towards China.
Both The Global Times and China Daily newspaper, both under the control of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), issued editorials this week condemning the US and framed Beijing as the victim of Washington’s aggressive foreign policy.
In the Global Times editorial, they accused the US of “pushing the world back to confrontation between major powers” and undermining international diplomatic order.
They suggested Washington had “pulled geopolitical levers and imposed the most intense strategic pressure on Russia” due to the expansion of NATO.
It said: “Now, the US is using its extreme geopolitical tools on China.
“It is making the ideological conflict with China more extreme because it is the cheapest means to mobilise its allies against China.
“It supports all countries that have territorial disputes with China, incites them to adopt a hard-line approach toward China, and smears China’s foreign cooperation to overthrow the world order.
“It aims to worsen China’s external environment and make people in other countries less willing to cooperate with China.”
The article claimed the US was forcing other nations to take sides against the Communist nation and said the “geopolitical maniacs” in Washington are ending a long period of peace since the Cold War.
It said: “We are likely to enter a new era with more hatred and the menace of war.
“The US political elite behind such changes are bound to be shamed by history.”
In the editorial published in China Daily, it accused the “brattish behaviour” of the US and said they are “stubbornly” clinging to unilateralism.
It read: “The current US administration’s penchant for unilateralism and frequent withdrawal from international agreements have had negative impacts on global stability.”

It argued the US was like a “spoiled child” and said Washington needs to “grow up and shoulder” responsibilities.
Under the Trump administration, China has become the target of a number of accusations including deliberately starting the coronavirus pandemic.
President Donald Trump has continually blamed Beijing for the deadly outbreak and accused the World Health Organisation of being “China-centric”.
China denied coronavirus originated in its nation despite the first recorded cases being from the city of Wuhan.
As well as the outbreak of the coronavirus, tensions between the nations have increased in the South China region.
The highly contested area has seen both the US and China extend their military presence.
Both nations have completed large-scale military drills and the US was accused of flying into Chinese airspace last month.
Earlier this year, the US Air Force and Marines conducted training exercises in the area with three submarines joining ships and aircraft in the nearby Philippine Sea.
The actions were thought to be a reaction to Chinese harassment of ships drilling for resources in nearby waters.
In April, three US ships joined the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Parramatta and sailed to the region to demonstrate a commitment to keeping the sea open.
