Russians are likely to be prosecuted for war crimes after images of at least two mass graves and torture chambers surfaced from the suburb of Bucha, northwest of Kyiv. Those suspected of the atrocities in Bucha are focused on certain units, including two detachments of Chechen paramilitaries. The events in Bucha have bought wide-ranging condemnation from Western nations, thus the European Union is considering sanctioning Putin’s daughters, Katerina Tikhonova and Mariya Vorontsova.

Eye-witness accounts and social media images suggest that deployed forces in Bucha included two sections of the bloody Chechen special forces from the Russian National Guard, which reportedly has direct links to Putin. The Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has previously been accused of war crimes in his territory and Syria. Oleksiy Reznikov, the Ukrainian Defence Minister, has compared the actions in Bucha to Nazi history.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN Security Council on Tuesday and said: “The Russian military and those who gave them orders must be brought to justice immediately for war crimes in Ukraine.” There is not yet solid evidence tying any specific Russian unit to the atrocities, but Western sources have confirmed sightings of specific units. A Bucha resident told The i Paper that a Russian soldier she identified as Chechen had threatened to “cut” them “up” if they did not co-operate.
