UK to suffer as hurricane season set to bring thunder, lightning and heavy rain

Large parts of England will be subject to a yellow thunder warning this weekend as the country continues to endure a stormy September.

The warning encompasses most of the east of the country, stretching down from Newcastle upon Tyne to north London, but also spreading west across to Birmingham and as far as Manchester.

Hurricanes that have formed in the Atlantic are partly responsible for the poor weather conditions that are in stark contrast to the summer-long drought most of the UK has seen.

Downpours earlier this week were caused by a low pressure front combining with an "extra-tropical cycle" with the Met Office's Aidan McGivern explaining the impact that the beginning of the hurricane season will have on these shores shortly.

He said: "Things have changed since the start of the month. For starters, rain has arrived in many parts of the UK but also we’ve seen hurricanes form in the Atlantic.

"It has been a remarkably quiet start to the Atlantic hurricane season but now it has turned busier. Hurricane Earl, Hurricane Danielle as well – don’t worry these aren’t going to hit the UK as fully-formed hurricanes but they will have some influence on the UK’s weather over the next week or so."

On the portents of a wet weekend, MeteoGroup, are forecasting that showers will develop across England and Wales during Saturday.

For Sunday, meanwhile, it is predicted that rain will affect northern and western areas, although clouds will blanket much of the country.

Looking further ahead to the start of next week, the UK should be mostly dry with some sunny spells in the south on Monday, although rain could spread to many northern areas.

On Tuesday, meanwhile, it is forecasted to be dry in the north, with some heavy showers in the south.
