Two people have died after reportedly being shot dead by police in Paris during post-election riots.

A police source told the AFP agency that officers in the French capital opened fire after a vehicle began speeding towards them.

The incident occurred just after midnight local time. A security perimeter had been set in the centre of the city on Sunday evening following violent far-left street protests against the re-election of Emmanuel Macron.

A special police taskforce is expected to attend the scene to inspect the use of a lethal weapon by officers.

The incumbent President defeated extreme right challenger Marine Le Pen by 58.6% to 41.4% in the second round of the election.

Earlier in the evening a video appeared to show police dramatically charging at protestors as protests in response to Macron's victory turned violent.

Dozens of campaigners can be seen running away from the scene as police respond to the aftermath of the results of the 2022 French presidential election at Place de la Republique.

French journalist Simon Louvet uploaded the video on Twitter and said there was "strong tensions" between the police and campaigners.

He said: "Police charge, several demonstrators on the ground. The group is driven back to the middle of the Place de la République, locked on all sides. No strategy on the protest side."

Further protests are expected on May 1 on an annual day of direct action by left-wing street campaigners.
