After being slapped in the face by an angry French resident during a visit to southeastern France, President Emmanuel Macron said that slapping someone in the face is “not democracy”. Mr Macron branded the attack as “stupidity” and that he would not “respond”. His comments were later echoed by France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex in the French Parliament where he denounced the “violence” that took place on Tuesday.

Mr Macron told reporters on Wednesday: “Some people express anger, sometimes disarray – I am still here.

“That’s legitimate anger and we will continue to respond.

“But to stupidity and violence?

“No, not in a democracy!”

French Prime Minister Jean Castec later addressed the issue in parliament, also saying the slap was not democratic.

He said: “Democracy is about debate, it is about dialogue.

“Where ideas clash and legitimate disagreement expressed.

“But it can never be about violence.”
