North Korean leader Kim Jong-un showed off a more slender figure this week, when he opened the annual ruling party meeting.

The 37-year-old has often fluctuated with his weight, but his latest appearance appears to show a slimmer Kim at the 4th Plenary Meeting of the 8th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

It is his first public appearance since the death of his great uncle earlier this month.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the former tubby tyrant had lost around 44lb and it was rumoured that this was down to him having a gastric band.

It was thought that he weight 22 stone last year, having gained roughly one stone per year of his 10-year reign, and it also doesn't help Kim that he's only 5ft 7in tall, which means that any weight gain will show up more so than on a taller person.

According to The Sun, Kim loves to fill himself up on Swiss cheese, caviar and lobster while drinking multiple bottles of wine in a night – all while his people are going through poverty.

The gathering is Dear Leader's chance to tell – or more likely demand – of his plans for the North Korean people for the year ahead.

The meeting began on Monday, and has no end date – last year's lasted four days – but involves all the top government officials and army generals.

As with most things from the isolated nation, details of what has so far taken place at the meeting are scarce.

According to CGTN News, the “tense” food situation across the country was acknowledged, and a “medium and long term development strategy” has been implemented to solve this.

A new program focussed on socialist rural construction, which was reported as “the most scientific and revolutionary path” to solve the issue, won the “full support and approval” of the meeting's participants.

It is thought that the topic of nuclear weapons and tensions with the US will be discussed.

The meeting has, historically, been used to make major announcements, such as in 2018 when Kim detailed how a delegation would attend the Winter Olympics held in South Korea, or in 2019 when he said he wanted to continue talks with then-US President Donald Trump.

According to NK News, one of the few outlets to obtain details of the meetings, future “nuclear weapon developments and other military plans” will be discussed, as well as “opening the door for “dialogue with the international community, and take a step forward for engagement and cooperation”.
