Shooting victim and armed suspect shot dead by Lakewood police are identified

A man shot dead while sitting in his car in a Lakewood Walmart parking lot and a man suspected of the fatal shooting, who was then shot and killed by police, have been identified.

Steven Scott Hargis, 27, of Lakewood, died at the scene, 440 Wadsworth Blvd., on Friday morning, police said in a news release.

Police on Monday also identified the suspect in the shooting as 46-year-old Matthew Lyvon Paul, of Denver. The motive remains under investigation.

On Friday, Paul, while still armed, fled the shooting scene and attempted to carjack employees and customers at a nearby Grease Monkey shop, 395 Wadsworth Blvd., according to police.

Soon after the shooting, officers contacted Paul in the 7700 block of West Fourth Avenue where he fired multiple shots, hitting police vehicles and nearby residences, police said. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The officers who shot Paul are on administrative leave, per policy, pending an internal investigation. They were not identified on Monday.
