Scandals which rocked royals – from Charles’ racy call to Wills’ dirty dancing

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to leave the monarchy in 2020 sent shockwaves throughout the Royal Family.

A year on from Megxit, their remaining patronages and honorary military appointments have been stripped – and the couple will not be returning as working royals.

Officials are still reeling from their bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview, in which a series of staggering allegations were made.

However, the palace is no stranger to scandal.

Several senior royals have previously put the Queen in awkward positions, and advisers have been forced to intervene.

Here, the Daily Star takes a look at some of the biggest royal controversies.

Prince Charles and Camilla’s explosive phone call

A transcript of a conversation between Prince Charles and Camilla was released just a month after he and Princess Diana had confirmed their split.

It was originally recorded in 1989, while both the Prince and Princess of Wales were still married.

At one point, Charles said: “Oh, God. I'll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!”

Camilla joked that he would come back as a “pair of knickers” in a different life.

Charles responded: “Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck!”

He added: “My luck to be chucked down a lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down.”

Princess Diana afterwards branded the call, dubbed Camillagate, as “sick”.

Princess Diana’s bombshell revelations

  • Schoolgirl who claimed boy, 10, fathered her child thinks she is pregnant again

In 1995, Diana sat down for a tell-all interview with BBC journalist Martin Bashir.

At one point during the wide-ranging interview, she revealed she had suffered post-natal depression after Prince William was born.

Diana told Bashir: “You'd wake up in the morning feeling you didn't want to get out of bed, you felt misunderstood, and just very, very low in yourself.”

She discussed her struggles with bulimia, saying: "I was crying out for help, but giving the wrong signals, and people were using my bulimia as a coat on a hanger: they decided that was the problem – Diana was unstable.”

  • Cancer sufferer told to 'grow up' by his boss because he couldn't work weekends

Diana also revealed she knew about Charles’ affair with Camilla, saying: "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

She admitted she had been unfaithful to her husband, adding that she was “in love” with her riding instructor James Hewitt.

A few weeks later, The Queen urged her son and daughter-in-law to divorce.

The following year, they followed suit – with Charles and Camilla marrying in 2005.

Rumours abound about James Hewitt

  • Sick discovery made in bedside table of vile paedophile who raped toddler

Hewitt, a 62-year-old former Cavalry Officer, had an affair with Diana during her marriage to Charles.

Over the years, Hewitt has repeatedly denied that he is Harry’s dad and insisted that he didn’t meet the royal until after the Duke of Sussex was born.

The baseless theory is grounded in the fact that they both have ginger hair and look slightly similar.

He and Diana eventually went separate ways after he was deployed to serve in the Gulf War.

Last week, it was revealed thatHewitt is now living with his elderly mum and working as a £4,000 a year gardenerat a manor house in Farringdon, Devon.

Pictures obtained by theMailOnlineshowed him tending to the grass in a lawnmower and raking away leaves.

In 2005, Prince Harry was snapped wearing a Nazi armband at a costume party.

The prince, who was 20 at the time, was reportedly dressed as a soldier in Nazi General Erwin Rommel’s Africa Korps.

The picture, splashed on The Sun’s front page, was taken at a friend’s birthday party in Wiltshire with the fancy dress theme "colonial and native".

It came just two weeks before the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews said the costume was in "bad taste”.

Clarence House afterwards said in a statement: "Prince Harry has apologised for any offence or embarrassment he has caused. He realises it was a poor choice of costume."

Prince William parties during lads’ holiday

  • Fears cartel sources will 'wind up dead' as agents 'don't know who they can trust'

In 2017, the Duke of Cambridge was recorded dancing at a club in Switzerland with two women.

William left Kate Middleton at home to go on a ski trip in the Verbier resort.

In the footage, he was seen waving his arms around and appearing to put his arms on a woman’s waist.

An onlooker told The Sun: “He was dancing so wildly that I did a double take when I first saw him and thought it must be a lookalike.

“But before long everyone realised they really were partying with Prince William.

“I decided I had to film it with my phone or no one would ever believe me.

“He was dancing with a very attractive blonde girl to hip hop and really going for it — it was proper dad dancing.”

Royal expert Katie Nicholl said: “It’s safe to assume that Kate will be far from happy about this.”

Prince Andrew’s disastrous Newsnight interview

During a bombshell BBC Newsnight interview last November, Prince Andrew was quizzed on his friendship with convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein killed himself in a New York jail in August 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges.

In the car crash hour-long broadcast, Andrew said staying at Epstein’s New York mansion was the “honourable” thing to do.
