Princess Diana was victim of huge gaffe on royal trip to US with Prince Charles

Princess Diana twice fell foul of a US President getting her name wrong during a single dinner.

The former leader of the free world Ronald Regan was giving a toast over dinner when he made the embarrassing slip but got it wrong again when he tried to correct himself.

The then-Prince Charles and Diana were visiting the USA in 1985, in a time of love for the monarchy across the pond.

A high-profile meal was held at the White House in Washington, DC, on October 9 and both the Prince and Princess of Wales were in attendance.

But right at the big moment, President Regan got his words mixed up and called Diana, “David”.

Realising his mistake he backtracked in an attempt to right his wrongs – but then he called her “Diane”.

The man spearheading the fight against the Soviet Union at the time said: “Permit me to add our congratulations to Prince Charles on his birthday just five days away.

"And express also our great happiness that we have been able to have this affair with Princess David… Princess Diane here on her first trip to the United States."

Awkward indeed – and to make matters worse it was seen first-hand by notable attendees Clint Eastwood, John Travolta and Tom Selleck.

The night took a few more interesting turns and even saw the Princess take to the dancefloor with Travolta.

Travolta told a PBS Special, In Their Own Words: Diana, Princess of Wales, that: "About 10 o’clock at night, Nancy Reagan tapped on my shoulder and said, 'The princess, her fantasy is to dance with you. Would you dance with her tonight?'

"I took her and the whole room cleared. We danced for what felt like 15 minutes."

In the book, The Way We Were: Remembering Diana by Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell , this claim was disputed.

He said that the Princess of Wales hadn’t wanted to take to the floor with the Pulp Fiction star.

"Diana really wanted to share the floor with one of the world’s greatest ballet dancers, Mikhail Baryshnikov,” he wrote.

"Nancy and (Ronald) Reagan set up the press to take a picture of her dancing with John Travolta."

According to Marie Claire, Diana danced with many that night, but not Prince Charles.
