One of the UK's worst paedophiles who wanted to abolish the age of consent has died after contracting Covid-19.

Monster Steven Freeman, 66, was once the notorious leader of the vile Paedophile Information Exchange.

Freeman tested positive for the killer virus on December 17 and his health quickly deteriorated. He was transferred to the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital from Bure Prison, near Norwich, where he was serving his sentence.

A source said: "He won't be missed. He was the leader of a truly vile organisation."

Evil Freeman led the Paedophile Information Exchange, which campaigned to get rid of the age of consent.

It was set up in 1974 and at one point had 250 members before it was officially disbanded in 1984.

Freeman was jailed in 2011 after he was found in possession of 3,000 vile drawings in his London home, some showing children being raped.

He held weekly meetings at his home to view and exchange child abuse images.

After pleading guilty Freeman became the first person convicted for making drawings of children being raped.

The images were described as "vile and disgusting" and among the worst the police had ever seen before the Old Bailey.

Freeman was sentenced to 30 months, but under imprisonment for public protection sentencing guidelines prisoners have to serve a minimum term before applying to the Parole Board for release.

They have to prove they are no longer a risk to the public. It is not known whether Freeman applied for parole and was turned down.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "HMP Bure prisoner Steven Freeman died in hospital on 5 January. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed."
