A British couple have been found dead in a swimming pool in their French holiday home.

A man and woman in their 80s were discovered dead in the water last night by horrified neighbours at their home in Gignac, Hérault, in the south of France.

The deaths are being investigated by local police, and while it is likely the deaths were an accident, the true cause is currently unknown.

The unfortunate couple were found when their neighbours, who were meant to be visiting the couple for dinner, arrived to find no one was answering the door.

Suspicious, they entered the property to discover the two bodies floating in the water.

Emergency services were called but despite attempts to save the pair, it was too late.

According to local reports, an autopsy will be carried out to determine the time and cause of death – but no signs of a break-in or a theft were found at the property by police.

Sources are calming that police have said that it will most likely be ruled as an accidental death.

A source told La Depeche: "It is not ruled out that one of the spouses witnessed the drowning of the other then came to their aid and sank themselves.

"They were very nice people who came many times a year and who occasionally participated in the town's activities."
