Mini-heatwave to hit Britain in days as temperatures set to reach 26C

Britons look set to bask in 26C temperatures over the coming days amid predictions that the warm weather could continue later into the month.

The Met Office is forecasting highs of 25C for the first week of June, and is not ruling out a surge in temperatures as the month continues.

New maps show highs of potentially 26C and above could be reached by June 15, which is very close to heatwave temperatures.

The forecaster says temperatures of 25C or above must be recorded for three consecutive days for a heatwave to be declared, and this temperature must be 28C for some southern counties.

Forecasters are pinpointing temperatures reaching the mid-20s in early June as the Met Office predicts "dry and bright" weather.

According to the forecaster, Brits can expect the conditions to last for nearly another two weeks but said it's "too far ahead to give specific temperatures".

The forecaster said: "Through this period the highest temperature we are forecasting is 25C which could be recorded in parts of western England and Wales today or on Sunday."

Its long-range forecast up to June 15 predicts "predominantly settled conditions" with "plenty of fine, dry weather," adding: "Through the rest of this period, high pressure is expected to dominate in the north, meaning the mostly dry weather should continue.

"Meanwhile, lower pressure looks to develops to the south of the UK, bringing an increasing risk of rain, showers or thunderstorms to southern areas at times.

"Brisk winds in the south and near some eastern coasts at first should ease, meaning it should feel a little warmer here compared to many recent days, otherwise temperatures generally look to be near or above average throughout."

It went on to say: "Through the rest of this period, high pressure is expected to dominate in the north, meaning the mostly dry weather should continue.

However, the forecast for the second half of June could tell a different story, with the forecaster saying "confidence is low" for the period between June 15 and 29.

Its predictions said: "High pressure, with settled conditions, is expected to dominate in the north, though low pressure, with unsettled conditions are possible in the south at times.

"This will bring a risk of thundery showers or rain in southern areas, whilst drier conditions are more likely in the north. Temperatures overall will be near or above normal throughout the period."
