Man shot, severely injured by an El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy

A man is facing life-threatening injuries after he was shot by an El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy. The man and authorities were attempting to negotiate at Willow Springs Ponds in Fountain.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said around 3:30 p.m. on Monday , Fountain Police were conducting a follow-up investigation after an undisclosed incident at the Love’s Travel Center on Interstate-25 and Mesa Ridge Parkway. Authorities say officers felt endangered by the actions the man was taking and that he had a firearm.

Around four hours of unsuccessful negotiations ended around 8 p.m. when an El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect. Officials say they tried to deescalate the situation, including less-lethal ammunitions.

The suspected man was taken to the hospital, and no law enforcement agents were injured. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy has been placed on administrative leave.

The event is under investigation by the Colorado Springs Police Department.
