Liz Truss was today looking well past her sell by date as the Daily Star lettuce became odds on to outlast the faltering Prime Minister.

Bookies Ladbrokes have slashed the odds of the 60p veg from Tesco lasting longer than Liz to 10/11.

The odds came as more vultures seem to circle around the embattled PM, with some insiders suggesting she could be forced out of the job by Monday (October 17).

One angry Whitehall source, said: “She is removing every reason why I voted for her.”

Another said colleagues were “giving up on her” adding “there are weekend gatherings and she will be told to go on Monday.”

Truss, who was forced into embarrassing U-Turns on her economic policy and who sacked Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday, is increasingly powerless in Downing Street, with her party split about its next steps.

At a brief news conference in Downing Street on Friday, the Prime Minister dismissed calls for her resignation, saying she is “absolutely determined to see through what I have promised”.

But it comes amid multiple reports of Tory MPs and Conservative grandees plotting moves to force her from office even as Cabinet ministers remained publicly loyal to the Prime Minister.

A source apparently close to Mr Kwarteng suggesting that Ms Truss may only have bought herself a few more weeks in office.

To many observers, it appeared the end could be nigh for the Prime Minister after only a few weeks in the job.

Former Conservative leader Lord Hague warned Ms Truss’s premiership “hangs by a thread”.

Loyal MPs on Friday night were urging party colleagues to think again about any bid to oust Ms Truss, who is theoretically safe from a leadership vote for another year under the rules of the backbench 1922 Committee.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, said: “There are no historical precedents for what they have done to our economy.

“The crisis we’re facing at the moment is a crisis made in Downing Street and the damage has already been done and is very, very hard to reverse – you can’t reverse out of a car crash.”

“Sometimes this is the consequence of some awful world event, but this is self-inflicted, made in Downing Street, and everybody knows it.”

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “In what has to be right up there as one of the worst weeks in British politics, the Daily Star lettuce is now odds-on to outlast Liz Truss as PM.”
