An inmate in the Jefferson County jail has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for attacking a jail deputy with a crude weapon — a padlock tied to a sheet.

y Sept. 24″] after pleading guilty on July 13 to first-degree assault of a guard by an inmate, according to a district attorney’s news release.
The deputy was attacked at about 11 p.m. on Jan. 1 while performing an inmate count as part of routine lockdown, the release said. As the deputy was leaving the sleeping area Freyta attacked, hitting him in the face and head with the weapon. The deputy suffered a concussion, along with contusions and lacerations to his face and head.
Freyta had stolen the padlock from a deputies work station and tied to fabric from a sheet or pillowcase. The plea is Freya’s third felony conviction.
