A vicious tornado has ripped through a US town, leaving dozens of people injured.

The town of Gaylord in Michigan has been left in ruin after strong winds devastated it on Friday afternoon (May 20).

The number of injuries remains unknown at the moment, with the authorities confirming that those hurt are being transported to hospital.

No deaths have been confirmed so far.

The tornado hit the small town with a population of just 4,000 at around 3.40pm (local time) and there are reports of heavy damage to buildings.

A Michigan Department of Natural Resources worker described the wreckage caused to CNN as "catastrophic".

Michigan Police's Lt. Derrick Carroll said the tornado had ripped through a mobile home park, passed through Gaylord's business district and brought power cables down – with most of the damage caused on the west side of town.

Michigan Police tweeted: "Otsego County: Tornado touched down. MSP and local resources responding. More information to follow as it becomes available."

It then added: "Trees and power lines blocking roadways. Multiple homes and businesses damaged. Avoid the Gaylord area. Emergency crews are responding. Heavy damage throughout the area.

"Ambulances are transporting injured persons to local hospitals. No confirmed deaths at this time.

"A shelter is being established at E-Free Church in Gaylord located at 1649 E. M-32. The Red Cross will be setting up at that location."

Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer tweeted: "My heart goes out to the families and small businesses impacted by the tornado and severe weather in Gaylord.

"To the entire Gaylord community—Michigan is with you. We will do what it takes to rebuild.

"@mspnorthernmi and other first responders are on site to assist residents. We’re grateful to the police officers, firefighters, EMTs, utility workers, and so many others responding on the ground."
