Horror as girl, 7 crushed to death by marble statue in hotel courtyard

A seven-year-old girl was crushed to death by a 200kg (441lbs), 1.4m (4.6ft), marble statue while she was playing in a hotel courtyard.

The accident took place on Friday evening when Lavinia Trematerra from Naples, Italy, was playing with an eight-year-old boy, while on holiday with her parents in Munich, Germany.

An unfixed statue toppled from the pedestal it had perched on for around 20 years and hit the young girl in front of her father, lawyer Michele Trematerra.

Three people rushed to aid Lavinia, after hearing her screams in the hotel, and lifted the statue off her.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the child before taking her to a local hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her severe injuries almost two hours later.

Munich Police released a statement saying: "On Friday, August 26, 2022, at around 7.30pm, a child from Italy who was on vacation with her parents was in a courtyard of a Munich hotel.

"For reasons that are still unclear, a stone statue weighing around 200kg fell over and seriously injured the child.

"A scream made several people aware of the situation and they were able to free the child.

"An emergency call was then made."

The girl's mother Valentina Poggi, who is also a lawyer, wrote on social media: "You are and will always be our angel. Rest in peace, love of our lives."

Her father Michele said: "Our life has changed."

Police are investigating the incident and will probe claims that Lavinia may have climbed onto the statue.
