Girl, 16, ‘gang raped by 30 men in hotel room as they filmed attack’

A 16-year-old was allegedly gang raped by 30 men in a hotel room.

The victim was assaulted while drunk in at the Red Sea Hotel in Israel’s coastal resort of Eilat, according to police.

She approached officials last Friday, and two suspects have since been arrested.

The girl, who had arrived at the resort earlier this month, was not a guest at a hotel and was instead spending time with her girlfriends and some of their male friends.

She needed to use the bathroom, and was then taken to a hotel room and raped, police said.

Some of the men filmed the attack with their mobile phones, Haaretz reports.

The hotel door was open during part of the alleged assault, but the girl’s friend was unable to intervene.

She told her other friends what was happening, but they couldn’t get the men to stop, police said.

Her friend reportedly told investigators that one of the suspects “said he was a medic and wanted to help” after he realised the girl was drunk.

The friend said he “took advantage of her and slept with her when she was out of control”, Channel 13 News reported.

The first suspect was arrested after messages between him and the teenager revealed video documentation of the alleged assault, the Times of Israel reports.

He denied communicating with the victim and said someone else had been using his phone.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu afterwards tweeted: “This is shocking, there is no other word.

“This is not only a crime against the girl, this is a crime against humanity itself that is worthy of all condemnation and those responsible must be brought to justice.”

Defense Minister Benny Gantz added: “From yesterday afternoon, I’ve been trying, and failing, to understand: What is a man who is standing on a crowded line with dozens of others, on the way to a room where a young, disoriented girl is lying down, trying to prove?”

“The police investigation is still under way, but it’s important that I convey a message to those who participated or bore witness to this case or others: The only thing you’ve proven is what depravity of your soul and morality you are capable of.

“Before the criminal aspect, there is a moral soul-searching that must be done here. And to the complainant, it’s important that I say: My heart is with you, you are not alone.”

The girl underwent a medical examination to collect evidence and police are awaiting results.

The Ashkelon Magistrate’s Court yesterday extended the detention of one suspect by five days.

His lawyer said 30 people were involved in the incident.

Nine out of 10 rape cases in Israel are closed without charge, according to a survey released at the end of last year.
