Family keeps pig as pet after it saves own bacon by jumping from trailer

A clever piggy jumped the gun on the way to an abattoir by leapfrogging out of a trailer on the backs of two porkers.

Sarah Allen, 29, was transporting the pigs from her smallholding to a slaughterhouse 11 miles away.

But the farmer from Devon was dumbstruck when she realised on arrival there were only two pigs in her trailer.

A large-scale search team of friends and neighbours scoured the area to locate the runaway trotter.

Finally he was found safely by a farmer in nearby Milton Damerel and now Sarah thinks this little piggy deserves to go all the way home.

She said: “It was just a mad day. On the way to the abattoir we were saying how smoothly it had all gone.

“We got in to join the queue for the abattoir and my husband said: ‘Sarah there’s only two.’”

“But now he’s safe and well. He’s become quite a famous pig over the last 24 hours. This piggy is destined to stay with us.”

Sarah keeps three pigs on her smallholding in Langtree, Devon, each year – with a view to sharing the meat between friends and family.

The mother-of-two also keeps 16 chickens and three ducks as pets.

She and husband Stuart believe the pig was too small to climb over the back of the trailer himself.

They think in desperation he must have used his friends to propel himself out of the trailer on the way to the abattoir.

Sarah added: “We don’t tend to name them but a lot of people have said maybe we should name him Milton – after where he was found.”
