Dungeon staff say Dick is here to stay after complaints over offensive ride

A dungeon attraction is refusing to rename its Dick Turpin ride amid a series of complaints from disgruntled parents who have branded it "inappropriate."

Parents complaining of an "apparent rude nature of the nickname" to the York Dungeon have been brushed off by the general manager.

It comes after calls for the "Dick Turpin Ride" to be changed to the "Richard Turpin Ride" have left staff members "shocked."

But the ride, named after killer, thief and burglar Dick Turpin, is "here to stay" according to York Dungeon officials.

The ride sees revellers head aboard a darkened carriage for an encounter with highwayman Turpin, Turpin says "stand and deliver" over a tannoy.

But Dick's robbing ways were too much for some as general manager Mark Mattinson explained: "The character is one of our most frightful foes, and we know how much our guests enjoy interacting with him along with our other rogues and rascals throughout our shows.

"Our Dick’s back carriage ride is the grand finale of our York Dungeon tour, and thousands of guests have already enjoyed this thrilling end to their visit.

"We were shocked to receive complaints to change his name but despite any potentially rude connotations, we’re here to say that Dick, is here to stay.

"The York Dungeon is renowned for revealing the deepest and darkest secrets of the city’s unique past – whether that includes Dick or not."

Even rival dungeon owners and historic sights are defending York Dungeons, with Howard Johnson, co-owner of Eden Camp Modern History advising Mattinson to "ignore these woke idiots."

One man took to Facebook to say: "It's only offensive if you let it. How come all of a sudden people want to change the name of a person after hundreds of years in history? they need to get a life."
