Denver police this week arrested three men in connection to the fatal shooting of East Colfax community leader Ma Kaing and are seeking a fourth suspect identified in her death.
Police arrested Nu Ra Ah La and Lu Reh, both 20, in Denver on Monday, Cmdr. Matt Clark said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Police also arrested Pa Reh, 18, in connection to Kaing’s death while he was in custody in the Arapahoe County jail on a separate case.
A fourth suspect, 19-year-old Swa Bay, remains at large. Bay’s attorney told police he would turn himself in but has yet to do so, Clark said. Police also believe a fifth, unidentified person was involved in the shooting.
Kaing was killed July 15 outside her apartment complex on Xenia Street while unloading desserts for a catering job she had the following day. She was struck in the head with a stray bullet and died just out front of the building. Her oldest son, 22-year-old Kyaw Oo, held her as she died.
Her death sparked outrage from residents in the apartment building, Hidden Brooks, and the surrounding East Colfax neighborhood. In an emotional community meeting, residents told city leaders they had been asking for safety improvements to the area — like improved lighting and more cameras — for years without change.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
