A former Marine Corps general has warned the US should be very concerned over China’s proven ability to fire a hypersonic missile that can circumnavigate the globe. Retired general Arnold Punaro told Fox News the launch of the technologically advanced missile demonstrated the potential for the “weaponisation” of space. He also warned that “trillions of dollars” of the US economy were dependent on America’s continued access to space.

The former General told Fox News: “We should be more than concerned about the recent development in China with their demonstration of the ability to put a hypersonic glide missile, potentially with a nuclear warhead.

“It’s clearly a game-changer.

“It’s worse than a Sputnik moment.

“Sputnik was a benign satellite that demonstrated limited technical capability by the Soviet Union.

“You have to put this in the broader context…China is on the march militarily, economically, diplomatically, and even scarier, technologically.

“They’re way ahead of us in terms of hypersonic missiles, but they’re also ahead of us in technologies that are not just important to our military but important to our economy and our competitive position in the world,” continued the former general.

“5G, quantum, artificial intelligence, I can pick off seven or eight of them.

“This development is a game-changer because they can put at risk a lot of the investment we’ve made in our own defence infrastructure turn those things into museum pieces.”

He said: “This is a game-changer because it crosses a Rubicon of weaponising space, trillions of dollars of the US economy depends on our assured access to space and we cannot let this stand.

“So it’s worse in my judgement than a Sputnik moment.”

The former general added: “China is very bold and accurate about what they’re saying they’re going to do and they’re doing it.

“So they quadruple their military and things like that. We should be very concerned.”

Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden was taken to task over his administration’s failure to stop China from being able to “leapfrog” the US with their nuclear capabilities.

Following reports of China’s successful hypersonic weapon test, US Senator Lindsey Graham described the launch as “the biggest game-changer in the last 40 years.”

Senator Graham told Fox News: “Well, what does it matter to the people at home listening to this programme if, in fact, the Chinese have developed hypersonic missiles that can deliver a nuclear weapon is a military game-changer when it comes to nuclear forces.

“We’ve allowed the Chinese to leapfrog us, and we’re going to have to do one of two things get them to stand down and I don’t know how Joe Biden convinces anybody to stand down.”
