Britain has been shocked by some truly awful crimes over the years.
Some of these have led to a criminal being deemed so dangerous to society that they can never be released.
In these cases, judges can order that they are never let out of prison by handing them a whole-life sentence in court.
In England and Wales, a whole-life tariff means a convict will never be eligible for parole and will die behind bars.
These are not to be confused with life sentences, which usually have a minimum term set which means a lag will be eligible for parole after they have served that time.
There are understood to be more than 70 prisoners serving whole-life terms in the UK’s jails, including some of the country’s most notorious killers.
One of the most recent was handed down in January this year, while others stretch back decades.
Here are five of some of the most shocking cases which have led to a whole-life term being set.

Terrorist Khairi Saadallah stabbed to death three friends in less than a minute in a park and aimed to kill as many victims as possible, a court heard.
James Furlong, 36, David Wails, 49, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, were attacked as they enjoyed an evening in Reading after lockdown restrictions were eased in June 2020.
Libyan refugee Saadallah, who yelled "Allahu Akhbar" during the attack, admitted the murders and was handed a whole-life term in January this year.
The EastEnders actress stabbed and buried by her partner

Sian Blake, who played Frankie Pierre in EastEnders, was stabbed to death in 2015 aged 43 by her partner after he found out she planned to leave him.
Arthur Simpson-Kent then murdered their sons Zachary, aged eight, and four-year-old Amon at the family’s home in Erith, south east London
The twisted killer buried the three bodies in the garden before fleeing to Ghana.
He was later extradited and handed a whole-life sentence in 2016 after admitting the murders.

In a crime that shocked the nation, Labour MP Jo Cox was brutally murdered in her constituency of Batley and Spen, in West Yorkshire.
White supremacist Thomas Mair shot and stabbed the mum-of-two in June 2016 while he shouted “Britain first” in front of two of her assistants.
Police raided his nearby home and found Nazi-related material.
Mair was locked up for the rest of his days after being convicted at an Old Bailey trial in November 2016.

Dale Cregan lured PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes to a hideout in Mottram, Greater Manchester, with a 999 call while he was on the run for two murders.

He shot them and threw a grenade on to their bodies, before he then walked into a police station to confess.
The one-eyed killer was locked up for the rest of his life at Preston Crown Court the following year, in 2013.
The judge, Mr Justice Holroyde, said he had a “cold-blooded and ruthless determination to end the lives” of the police officers.

Andrew Randall sexually abused, tortured and murdered his seven-week-old daughter Jessica by throwing her head-first into the wooden arms of a sofa.
The baby had been born five weeks premature and with a congenital heart defect, a court heard.
She was abused almost from the day she left hospital until her death in November 2005.
The evil father admitted murder, causing grievous bodily harm and four counts of sexually abusing Jessica.
Randall, of Kettering, Northants, was handed a whole-life term in 2007.
