An animal lover who was distressed to see an injured "bird" sitting deathly still in their garden was left in stitches after discovering it wasn't quite what it seemed.
The concerned member of the public checked back regularly from their window to see if the injured "feathered friend" had recovered and flown away.
But hours passed, and the apparent bird had not moved – leaving the animal fan more and more anxious about its condition after fearing it had been fatally injured by a cat.
Following several hours, however, the animal lover realised they had made an embarrassing error as their wife pointed out something rather obvious about the "bird" in question.
Taking to social media site Reddit on Saturday, the animal fan shared their slightly ridiculous story.
The Reddit user Wils_152 uploaded a snap of a grassy lawn with a small brown mass nested among the blades.
They wrote: “Feeling sorry for a bird that's obviously been injured by a cat, just sitting there on the lawn all morning, unable to escape.”
But they added: “then realising it's a leaf four hours later.”
Fellow Reddit users embraced the ridiculousness of the scenario and teased the original poster.

One commented: “At least you know it’s okay.”
Another joked: “In your defence that’s a convincing leaf bird if you squint, 10+ feet away and with 4 pints of ale in your system.”
This prompted the original poster to comment: ”The pic doesn't do it justice TBH. There's a bit in front you can just about make out in the pic but in in real life it's more noticeable and looks yellow like a beak.”
They added: “That said, the missus spotted it was a leaf straight away so maybe I'm just a silly f**ker.”
Another asked: “Did you… Did you .. did you feel re-leaf when you realised it wasn't a bird.”
And the poster joked: “No I felt like a Great Tit.”
