The Foreign Secretary took over Brexit responsibilities after Lord Frost resigned from the position last year. It was hoped Ms Truss would be able to break the deadlock in talks over the solution to the Northern Ireland Protocol.
However, negotiators fear the EU is reverting to its “greatest hits” by not moving beyond offers to end trade disruption caused by the Protocol.
A Government source told the Telegraph: “It’s concerning that the EU doesn’t seem to understand the DUP, they seem to believe they’re Tories and not exactly taking the situation seriously.
“We’ve been trying to stress the importance of keeping communications calm.”
But now, Britons have urged the Foreign Secretary to invoke Article 16 as Britain does not need the EU.
Express.co.uk reader, known as Alfred E, wrote: “Has no one told him they us more than we need them?”
While BishopK added: “The UK wants a solution.
“EU does not recognise there is a problem to be solved because as far as they are concerned the NIP eliminates the problem.
“The only way to involve the EU in finding a solution is to invoke Article 16.”
A third Express.co.uk reader, TheRicardo, commented: “Article 16 is the only way to free NI from EU tyranny.”
Shropshirelad added: “Isn’t everyone else sick to the back teeth of this nonsense?
“Let’s go to WTO terms and take back all control and fishing and just get on.
“The UK wishes to be agile with a bloated and lethargic EU, not going to end well for the UK.”

A sixth person, MissingEUAlready2, commented: “Sooner or later the decision must be made to either fully submit to the EU or leave on WTO terms.
“There is no middle ground.”
And CR2 added: “The Eu is despised & mocked by everyone.
“The quicker it topples, the better for everyone.
“Just give the people of Europe an end date when the whole wretched thing will end.”
Ben Gazi wrote: “The EU does not care about people that is the real problem with it, it is uncoupled and disconnected from them.”
Tasunkowitko added: “Invoke Article 16 and end this fiasco once and for all.”
