Boris Johnson shut down attacks from Angela Rayner as the deputy Labour leader questioned the Government’s spending on defence. Mr Johnson ridiculed Ms Rayner’s interest in the money spent on the British military as he pointed out her fellow Labour MP Emily Thornberry had wanted to  “get rid of the army.” He said: “I think it’s quite incredible we’re hearing this from the Labour Party.

“They would have pulled us out of NATO.

“And actually, I think the Right Honourable Lady wanted to get rid of the army.

“She wanted to abolish the army, the woman sitting next to her.”
