Prime Minister Boris Johnsona and wife Carrie are expecting a child. The mother-of-one posted the happy announcement on Instagram and also revealed she suffered a miscarriage earlier this year.

Writing on her Instagram post, Mrs Johnson wrote: “Hoping for our rainbow baby this Christmas.

“At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken.

“I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I’ve also felt like a bag of nerves.”

She added: “Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well.

“I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too.”

A rainbow child is a child born after a miscarriage, stillborn or neonatal death.

The 33-year-old, who married her husband in a secret ceremony at Westminster Abbey at the end of May, said the incident left her “heartbroken”.

She added she has been left feeling “like a bag of nerves” after discovering she was pregnant again.

Alongside the touching comments, Mrs Johnson also posted a photograph of a brooch in the shape of a baby’s pram.
