The SNP Westminster leader expressed his astonishment to Sky News’ Kay Burley that Boris Johnson remains as Prime Minister despite a police investigation into alleged Downing Street parties as he made further calls for the Prime Minister’s head. He added how Mr Johnson has “lost the right to govern” through the now sixteen alleged COVID-19 breaching parties held throughout lockdown. It comes as the Metropolitan Police will now investigate eight of the bashes, including a birthday party held for Mr Johnson and 30 guests which involved cake at the height of lockdown.

Mr Blackford told the show: “He [Boris Johnson] needs to recognise he has lost the trust of the public, he has demeaned the office of Prime Minister.

“We have a situation where there are multiple complaints the police are going to investigate.

“Goodness gracious, the thought of a Prime Minister being questioned under caution! He really ought to go.”

And in almighty jab he slammed the partygate saga as “embarrassing” and “a stain on our democracy”.

He claimed how Britons “all knew of the Prime Ministers character before” but urged Mr Johnson to reflect on the “public mood” and now step down.

The Scot added: “Whether we are talking about birthday parties, or that whole conduct in Number 10 of partying.

“When people were observing the rules, people couldn’t be with their loved ones when they were dying.

“Couldn’t visit their loved ones in care homes.. and they see a Prime Minister that carried on regardless, that did as he pleased, and doesn’t seem to accept responsibility.

Tory MPs will have to either 'sack or back' Boris Johnson

“He really needs to recognised he has lost the right to govern!”

ITV News reported that up to 30 people attended a June 19, 2020 birthday party for Mr Johnson, where wife Carrie and chums sung Happy Birthday and ate cake, despite lockdown rules at the time banning such indoor gatherings.

It comes as Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick said her force were now investigating “potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations” as part of a criminal investigation into the bashes.

This will come alongside senior civil servant Sue Gray’s report into potential rule flouting parties which could be released as early as today.
